Chapter 13

“Pregnant? What the hell, son?”

Ten minutes, five frames, and a pitcher of beer later, and those were the first words Remy had said to him since Bryson had delivered the happy news. He’d been back in California for two weeks, but had yet to talk to Remy, who’d been out of town on business.

“Thanks for the support, Remy,” Bryson grumbled.

Remy sighed. “You know I got your back, son. I’m just shocked. You dropped a few bombs on me.” Remy ticked off everything Bryson had told him that afternoon. “The will, the house, and a baby. That’s a lot.”

Bryson agreed with Remy. So much had happened in such a short time. “Things are definitely moving fast.”

“You’re moving back to Michigan after you vowed to never do that. To make matters even more complicated, you’re going to be living in a house that you fought like hell to get away from. Are you sure this is what you want to do?”

“What else can I do, man? She’s already pregnant. I’m not going to live on the other side of the country and miss out on my kid’s life.”

“I get it. Believe me, I do. I wouldn’t suggest you leave your kid, son. You know that. I just . . . I’m . . . I don’t know. In all the years I’ve known you, you’ve always been so obsessive about your fifteen-year plan and staying focused on your goals. And you went and got someone pregnant? Did you leave your brain and your condoms at home?”

Remy was absolutely correct. Bryson wasn’t impulsive by a long shot. He’d planned out his entire twenties. To the letter. Undergraduate degree in environmental engineering. Check. Graduate degree in planning. Check. Home ownership. Check. The remaining years of his plan consisted of working, meaningless hook-ups, and traveling. Settling down with one woman and getting married were earmarked for his mid-thirties. And babies were the start of his midlife plan, and definitely not on the agenda prior to marriage.

“I didn’t leave my brain or my condoms at home.”

“Why aren’t you more upset about this?”

Bryson wasn’t upset at all. Shocked, maybe. Wary, definitely. But upset wasn’t an emotion he’d felt regarding the baby. “Is there a reason I should be mad? Because I’m not upset. I’m actually okay with this. And like I told you before, I’m not going to abandon my child.”

Remy studied him. “Or its mother. Son, I’m not sure who you think you’re fooling. Because if this was any other woman telling you she was having your baby, you’d be falling-down drunk somewhere or breaking every piece of glass in your house. The only reason you’re not is because it’s Jordan. The pink dress syndrome.”

Bryson laughed. “Whatever, man. You act like I’ve been pining over Jordan to the exclusion of every other female.”

“Maybe not pining. But I watched you at the funeral. She’s got you wrapped around her fingers, her toes . . . everything.”

Throwing his towel at Remy, Bryson stood and picked up his bowling ball.
